Yerba Mate

Yerba mate is a traditional South American beverage made from the dried leaves of the Ilex paraguariensis plant. Known for its grassy, slightly bitter flavour and natural caffeine content, yerba mate is enjoyed both for its invigorating qualities and its role in social gatherings.

To prepare yerba mate the traditional way, loose leaves are placed in a hollowed-out gourd, filling it about two-thirds full. The gourd is gently shaken to position the finer particles at the top, then tilted to create a slope of leaves on one side. A small amount of cool water is poured into the lower side to moisten the leaves, followed by hot water—never boiling, as this can make the brew bitter. The drink is sipped through a metal straw called a bombilla, which filters out the leaves. The same serving of mate can be refilled with hot water many times, allowing for a long, shared experience.

Yerba mate can also be prepared in a French press or teapot, using loose leaves or tea bags, and enjoyed hot or cold. Its distinctive taste and energizing effect make it a favourite for both daily rituals and communal moments. Store yerba mate in an airtight container away from light and moisture to preserve its freshness and flavour.
